Preparations for Checkout 3

S. Digel, 24 August 2005

Updates are in Red.

What remains to be done before Checkout 3?

1. Updating the sky model from checkout 2.

GRB - updates to GRB package have been checked in by Nicola; I have not tried it yet.  I have heard that Nicola has, and maybe knows how to run, the GBM simulation software, too, now

Pulsars - Max has got EGRET pulsar light curves and a phony ephemeris for pulsarSpectrum; multiple ephemerides (different timing parameters for different time ranges) probably will be implemented for checkout 3; binary decorrections probably will not.

Blazars - Gino has generated simulated light curves, and Jim is implementing source definitions for a small number of fake blazars

Diffuse - I've generated new H I column density maps using a much cleaner H I survey than has been available before for; the new maps are not the ultimate, for various reasons, but should provide a gamma-ray model that is much cleaner than we had for checkout 2; Igor is looking into it.

    Dark matter - Maybe

Pointing/livetime history - Exists, thanks to Julie.  Implementing the 'in SAA' flag most likely will not be done for checkout 3.  We'll have to pick a livetime fraction; probably it is not worth making that fraction vary in a geomagnetic cutoff-dependent way just yet.

2. Finalizing (really, or at least mostly) the FITS definitions of the high-level data products.

To the extent that it will be done for checkout 3, it has been done.  Basically this has meant cleaning up keywords for ingest of the event files files at the GSSC.  GTIs have started to bite us, at the level of appearing to be more trouble than they are worth.  This will not get resolved for checkout 2.

3. Generating the simulated gamma rays.

This has not happened yet.  It should be easy once the sky model and it inputs are together.  I'd like to try this on Thursday if at all possible.  We'll want to have some checkout 3 pictures to show anyway at the collaboration meeting, i.e., before the data are released.

4. Writing documentation.

Chuck has been leading the sifting and editing, with current versions posted here.  This seems to be taking shape well, especially with good contributed tutorials.

5. Making windows installation work.

Well, I've revealed a lot of ignorance this week.  Windows builds are not happening automatically, for system reasons, and this probably will not be resolved before checkout 3.  Navid has made a couple of builds by hand (and compilation of the most current code seems to fail for many packages).  Tony's installer seems to work, basically.  The bin/ directory seems to basically be ok, too, although hitches at the level of not being able to handle spaces in directory names (such as for the default directory that the installer suggests) are a hang up.

6. Finishing up the current development work on the tools

What we have heard about today.

7. Preparing a 2 hour+ tutorial session during the collaboration meeting,

    Agenda complete, preparations under way
