GLAST Standard Analysis Environment (SAE) Evaluation Questionnaire
Checkup 1
October 12, 2004 - October 29, 2004

Reviewer: David Band
Software Component: evtbin
Summary of Tests Performed:
1. Run to produce PHA file, logarithmic E bin
2. Run to produce PHA2 file, linear E bin, linear t bin
3. Run to produce LC file, linear t bin
4. Run to produce CMAP file
5. Run to produce PHA file, E bins from file
6. Run to produce PHA2 file, E and t bins from file

User Interface

1. What, if anything, about the choice and meaning of parameters
could be improved? Are there new parameters which need to be
added? Are the current parameters sensible?

2. Are there any prompts you would suggest rewording?

"Name of the input file" should be "Name of the event file"

Is the FT2 file now being called a 'spacecraft file?' If not
then the standard term should be used.

Units should be provided for the energy: "Start value (MeV) for
first energy bin" and "Stop value (MeV) for last energy bin"

3. Are there any hidden parameters which you think should be
prompted for or vice versa?

4. Would you like the prompts to appear in a different order?

Perhaps all the input files should precede the output file

5. Would you suggest changes to the default values of any
parameters? Changes to min, max fields?

Tool Behavior

6. In what way, if any, did the tool perform unexpectedly?

Tab completion does not work.

JIRA GRB-8 issue: PHA2 file created by evtbin has no DETCHANS
value in EBOUNDS header
The PHA2 file created by evtbin has no value for the DETCHANS
keyword in the EBOUNDS header. This causes rspgen to fail when
attempting to process the PHA2 file. A PHA1 created by evtbin
does have this value.

7. Were there any aspects of the tool's output which seem
scientifically suspicious to you? (e.g. fluxes too large,
number of events selected too small, etc.)

JIRA GRB-6 issue: CMAP option of evtbin appears to garble DEC
When I run the CMAP option of evtbin using ft1tiny.fits (events
centered on the Crab) asking for a 25x25 degree region centered
on the Crab, the resulting map is empty. When I run it for a
360x180 degree region, there is a cluster of counts at Dec~90
instead of 22. When I try to map a 35x35 region centered on this
apparent position, an empty map results.

8. Was there information (i.e. output) the tool did not provide
which you think it should?

In choosing time bins, it would be useful if the user were informed
about the time range in the data.

9. Was there information (i.e. output) the tool provided which
you think it should not?

Future Development

10. List new features you would like to see implemented, in
descending order of importance. Please flag any which you
think are critical for DC2.

For the LC option, the desired energy and spatial range should be specified.
For the CMAP option, the desired energy and time range should be specified.

Tab completion

11. Are there any aspects of this tool you would change in order
for it to work more smoothly with other parts of the SAE?

General Notes

Please include here any comments about this tool which do not
fit into one of the categories above.

I entered a parameter name in the wrong case. The program died gracefully,
but the error message was not very informative. I don't know whether this
is a general FTOOLS message or an SAE message.
