Data Challenge II Planning
The planned kickoff date for DC2 is mid February 2005. Steve gave an initial look at DC2 planning at the DC1 Closeout meeting.
Challenges
- generating 1-day's backgrounds; sampling them.
- adding deadtime to Gleam
- some Quicklook capability
- working the GBM into DC2
- smooth data transfer to the SSC
- validated Gleam & sky model
- updated background rejection/PSF cuts
- updated IRFs
- improved code distribution
In order to get there, we need/want the following:
- Gleam
- update and validate the FSW Onboard Filter
- add deadtime in some fashion
- perform validations as deemed necessary
- upgrade System Tests for better diagnostics
- update background rejection analysis
- include Classification Tree, and mechanism to use Insightful Miner output
- complete performance evaluation and parameterization
- improve Cal energy sim/reconstruction
- add event interpretation algorithm and output
- enable ACD failure modes
- make sure it is possible to enable failure modes in all subsystems
- revisit final analysis ntuple (merit and FT1)
- create an analysis platform for the event-based analysis
- Processing Pipeline & related tools
- be able to generate the DC data via the Level 1 pipeline and populate the dataset database
- create web interface to show available data
- create tools to efficiently prune and concatenate the output datasets; update LAT Data Server to use these tools
- Sources and Orbit simulation
- Phony ephemerides for pulsars in D4 format
- Improved albedo sources (currently does not have directional variations)
- First generation LAT interstellar emission model
- Improved orbit/attitude simulation
- implement and test variable fluxes
- AGN, pulsar
- Science Tools
- Likelihood updates
- Implement zenith angle cuts
- Implement finite energy resolution - also understood but not yet implemented
- Study performance tradeoffs vs. execution speed for various approximations
- Implement source model definition tool (w/ catalog access)
- Make utility to calculate exposure maps (likely related to makeExposureCube)
- Undertake statistical tests of likelihood analysis
- Response Functions
- Latest reconstruction/background rejection/classification
- Improved characterization
- CALDB interface
- Pulsar Tools
- Decide what LAT-specific tools are needed (vs. existing FTOOLS)?
- Resolve open issues in definitions of ephemerides
- GRB tools [below is a placeholder]
- What LAT-specific is needed?
- What are the odds of getting a uniform simulation so GBM and LAT data can correspond to the same burst? How about joint analyses in XSPEC?
- Event display
- In progress (Fox and Ruby ok w/ HEASARC?)
- Data server
- High-performance server for event summaries at SLAC, with integration between low-level and event summary files
- Data subselection utility (next generation, with plotting)
- Infrastructure
- tip (what further development is needed?)
- GUI? - where does sane fit in?
- Integrated plotting? (PyROOT?)
- Science tools system tests (Jim has a start)
- Installer - software distribution (Pat has been investigating candidates)
- Likelihood updates
- Documentation and Tutorial
- document TDS & Root output classes
- document installation and use of analysis platform
- update sample analysis
- update user tutorial
