Introduction

This page will hopefully serve as an introduction to the tools available for analysis of the GLAST 2001 Balloon Flight data.  The balloon instrument is composed of 4 distinct detector units:  Anti-Coincidence Detectors, eXternal Gamma Targets, CALorimter, and the TracKeR.  Here are some details pertaining to each subsystem:

OBTAINING FLIGHT DATA

The balloon flight has been completed.

TESTING

SLAC Cosmics
Before shipping the balloon instrument to Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC), a series of cosmic runs.  The data was initially stored in the heritage siue data format from the 1999 GLAST testbeam, later all runs used the new ivte data format.  NOTE:  There is no Tagger data in these raw data files!!!

Here is a more detailed description of SLAC testing

One can access the raw ivte data files from the following ftp site:
ftp-glast.slac.stanford.edu/glast.u02/bfem/data

GSFC Testing
Testing continued at Goddard Space Flight Center.  Details of the runs and where to obtain the data is available through this link.

NSBF testing
Once the balloon instrument was shipped to the National Scientific Balloon Facility, more tests were performed before flight.  Details of the runs and where to obtain the data is available through this link.

ROOT files:
The digi (raw) root file sturcture has changed since the 1999-2000 SLAC Test Beam.  For more information about the structure of the raw digi Root files, please see the description of the digiRootData package
To read in the files into Root - you will need a copy of the digiRootData library for your system.

Want to use Root2IDL?  See this page.

Running Reconstruction:

We can run the standard reconstruction algorithms on the balloon data, by using a package called bfemApp.  This application, takes a digi (raw) ROOT file as input and produces two output ROOT files:  one is a ROOT Summary ntuple and the other is a Recon ROOT Tree file.
