Core Minutes 1/30/2007
Present: Joanne Bogart, Toby Burnett, David Chamont,
Jim Chiang, Richard Dubois,
Warren Focke,
Berrie Giebels, Tom Glanzman, Navid Golpayegani,
Michael Kuss, Bryson Lee, Chuck Patterson, Igor Pavlin,
Leon Rochester, Tracy Usher, Larry Wai
- Heather and son: Due to the
arrival of James Anthony Kelly on Jan. 27, a
notable birthday but a little
earlier than expected (mom and son both doing well),
and consequently the abrupt start to 8 Heatherless weeks,
we are scrambling a bit to cover
essential functions.
- EngineeringModel
Michael, Anders and Joanne will team
up on EngineeringModel support. A new tag with a fix Anders made
to ldfReader is imminent.
- ROOT support
The upgrade to ROOT 5.14 was
ready to go except for gaining understanding of and, hopefully eliminating,
a warning message coming from AcdRecon described on
her
Confluence page. David Chamont will take over the reins on this one.
He will also get in touch with Heather when practical to learn about
schema evolution for our ROOT classes, which impacts exactly which libraries
are needed for an analysis.
- Spacecraft geometry: (Joanne)
- GBM
She now has in hand, thanks to Marc Kippen,
a gdml file (xml geometry description in a format
somewhat similar to ours) for GBM components. It's much more
detailed than we need or want. Volume descriptions for NaI and
BGO crystals can be directly translated from the gdml file,
but other supporting material has to be approximated (size, shape, material)
with made-up volumes. Furthermore, absolute coordinates are difficult
to decipher from the gdml source. She will investigate other methods of
obtaining them.
- Spacecraft proper The main tool here is a set of 1/4-scale
drawings. Some dimensions and positions can be read directly off the
drawings—but only if the relevant surface or dimension
is parallel to the plane
of some drawing and is visible. This leaves out a lot! Joanne has
been pestering Steve for additional information.
- Onboard Filter: (Tracy)
He has checked in code reverting to the old way of setting bits,
in particular which ones were masked off. There
was some question at the last Calibrations and Analysis Methods meeting
as to whether there was also a difference in the
behavior of other bits (there shouldn't be).
(Richard) What about ORing all the
filters (MIP and CNO as well as gamma) as will be done for real
data? (Tracy) It would be simple enough to do; users who wanted
to look only at gammas would have to make appropriate cuts.
- Irreducible backgrounds/MC output mods: (Tracy)
Practically ready to go. The code to write out trajectories to PDS was
already there, just not enabled. Tracy is also adding some relational
tables. There was a bug in the code to read them back in, now fixed.
Writing out trajectories for the gammas is taking more space than
expected so, even though background events will be smaller (because of
energy cut) overall savings may not be much. He had to make some
changes to RootIo which, ideally, Heather
should clear. Bill has a work-around to get at the variable
he cares about most (position of entering particle), decreasing
urgency for getting this in.
- System tests addition: (Richard) We
should have something for the alternate hadronic physics list.
- RM:
(Navid) RM is now building ScienceTools for RHEL4 (gcc 3.4).
GlastRelease is held up by need to compile external libraries.
See the gory details in Navid's
post to the Core list.
(Richard, Navid) There is an upcoming outage of RM for a disk server
upgrade.
(Toby) has a small request: would it be possible to include
the (cmtconfig) tag in the "details" page like
this one ?
- Another new arrival: Listen closely during meetings for the newest member
of the Dubois household, Samantha.
