Core Minutes 9/7/2004  

Present:    Joanne Bogart, Toby Burnett, David Chamont, Johann Cohen-Tanugi, Seth Digel, Richard Dubois,  Navid Golpayegani, Traudl Hansl-Kozanecka,  Michael Kuss, Pat Nolan, Chuck Patterson, James Peachey, Dirk Petry, Leon Rochester, Alex Schlessinger, Tracy Usher

The entire meeting was devoted to open JIRA issues, primarily those which might be considered "Core".  You can get to them all from the summary page Johann made (you'll need to log in to JIRA in order to see much). He is open to suggestions on what information to include for each issue,  how to order issues, etc.

(Richard) We definitely don't want to do this every week, just occasionally. Reordering (e.g., by priority) might streamline the process.

Issues generating some discussion include:

• Parameter naming: (James) ST-GEN3 See his eminently sensible proposal.
• GRB: GRB-1 This can't be closed just yet because EngineeringModel still assumes the old package organization. It will be cleaned up when Heather returns.
• Corba crash: (Richard) FRED-13 On Linux, using the latest EM tag with FRED as the gui, Gleam crashes when starting up the Corba server. The problem appears to come and go under different circumstances (for example, the application will run if the Message Service output level is set down to 2) which indicates it's likely due to a memory overwrite during Gaudi initialize. If so, any package could be responsible. When Riccardo comes to SLAC next week he and Joanne will work on it. [Meanwhile, Navid has agreed to see if Valgrind, which can diagnose overwrites as well as memory leaks, can tell us anything. ed.]
• Support of Gaudi v14r6 on Windows: (Toby) GAUDI-2 Main lesson is that we need someone who can handle general Windows system support.

  In a related comment, Johann mentioned that online Gaudi documentation seems quite old. Is this a question of updating our link or do we need to mention it to Gaudi maintainers? [Seems to be the latter. Release notes and documentation generated from code are up to date, but Developer's Guide and User's Guide are very old. ed.]

• Trigger bits: (Richard, Joanne) TRG-2 Now that GEM trigger bits are available (and not identical to bits produced by TriggerAlg) a decision needs to be made on whether one should overwrite the other and some scheme is needed to handle initialization. [see also GRINF-8. ed.]

• Implementing deadtime: (Toby) TRG-1 About done. He plans to also keep cumulative livetime. He will need to add an item to the tuple; awaiting discussion in analysis meeting.

• strstream: (Toby, Johann, Joanne) GRINF-9 There are still several places in our code where strstream is used rather sthan sstream when running on Linux.  If (as seems to be the case) we no longer support any strstream-only platforms, all mention of strstream should be eliminated.

• MySQL upgrade: (Alex) GRINF-6 This is waiting on upgrade of the glast0* machines from RH 7.2 (no longer supported at SLAC). (Richard) What will happen to calibration metadata dbs access while current host machine (glast01) is being upgraded? Is the host a job options parameter? (Joanne) Yes. Also can be set in calibUtil requirements file.

  (Toby) Speaking of upgrades, what happened with Xerces? (Joanne) Patch needed to parse our geometry files has been accepted and is in Xerces nightly builds, but there has been no official version release since. There should be one, version 2.6, shortly. When that has occurred and EngineeringModel has been delivered would be the time to upgrade.

• Dependency failures: (Alex, Richard) CMT-34 We need a policy decision on whether we want a build to continue if some intermediate step fails. Seems dangerous.
• Documenting patterns: (Toby) STDOC-3 The patterns have been documented.  The related issue of providing comprehensive advice to developers on how to structure requirements files remains. The goal is to hide all complexity in the patterns so that developers don't need to know the details.
• CITRIX: (Richard) MISC-7 The machine is configured; there is a Glast group. Still need to add users to the group and we'll be needing more disk space.
• RM and missing packages: (Toby) RM-10 Currently RM doesn't give a clear indication if a requested package is not present. He would like a consensus that this should be added.  (Alex) This can't be verified at checkout time of the package in question, but could be done as a separate pass.

A couple of non-JIRA announcements:

• nfs servers: (Richard) u03 and u04 are slated for demise. Everything is backed up and there is plenty of other server space for the contents.
• Em2: (Richard)  It's returning to SLAC.  I & T plans to take data starting Sept. 16th; we need to be ready.
