Core Minutes 10/11/2005
Present: Joanne Bogart, Philippe Bruel, Toby Burnett, David Chamont,

Pat Nolan, Igor Pavlin, James Peachey, Leon Rochester, Johann Cohen-Tanugi
- DC2 news: (Richard) 100 million background events
were generated at SLAC and another 100 million at Lyon. Now we're in wait-mode
while various people, notably Bill, look them over. Meanwhile, Toby is generating
large numbers of
background events on Windows: 343 million and counting.
Kick-off meeting is now expected to be something like Feb. 15; don't want
to overlap with delivering LAT to NRL.
- ROOT report: (David C., Heather)
We heard first from
David,
then from
Heather,
about the ROOT 2005 Users
Workshop. Both were impressed by the recent large growth spurt in ROOT
developers—from about 3 to more like 15—especially since they
appear to all work well together.
Some of the more notable improvements discussed include a totally
revamped and rewritten math library, lots of work on the PROOF
(Parallel ROOT) paackage, and a new method
of creating the dictionary—it's available as an option now; at some
point it will be the default.
A major release, 5.08., is expected in December. We should get experience
with the development release as quickly as possible so we can report
any problems we see. Then we should think about moving to the production
release when it has settled down.
Heather met Ursula at the meeting. Although she's very busy, she offered
to help with RootCnvSvc; she would like to see it fully integrated and used.
- ADASS: (Richard) Not too much to report.
There was a very nice Python tutorial.
- Upgrades: (Richard) Around December we
should be looking at possible upgrade paths. Is it time to upgrade
compilers? (Heather) A new Gaudi release is coming soon. We're
encouraged to wait for it rather than upgrade to v16.
- Extra-curricular: Here is the
bottom line
(see "Results Master"). Tracy says he doesn't have any short stories
from his trip, only long ones, so we didn't get to hear any.
