See Toby's Core Issues/Status document for additional comments on most of the following.
New tool versions: We're moving to still later versions of some tools: Gaudi v11r4 and CMT v1r12p20021129 (with vsnet mods).
Compilers: Regretfully we will, for the time being, abandon attempts to move to VC7 and gcc 3.2. Each has its own intractable problem: dynamic_cast across separately-loaded libraries for gcc, uncompilable code produced by rootcint for VC7. Maybe there is a lesson here for us to avoid breaking new ground if possible.
There's a place for us: but not on AFS. The collection of external libraries to be used on SLAC Linux with gcc 2.95.2 is in NFS space because we didn't have enough AFS space for the job. Some place, somewhere, was a prerequisite for getting the nightly builds going with the new compiler. Alex is working on this.
Externals and distribution: (Richard) How external will Gaudi be? (Toby) we will distribute built binaries, stripping out unnecessary objects. For Windows both Debug and Release dlls (and also Debug info files) will be included. We will also be bundling up distributable versions of all external libraries, including Gaudi, into a single (zip or gz) file.
GleamRelease sandbox: Still tinkering a bit. Affected package owners will be notified about changes so that they can do the merge. If they don't take care it in time, others will. We're now aiming for 10 Jan., 2003, to get this all done. Now that the new Gaudi is in place it's time to again start actively looking for leaks.
GLAST release system: See Toby's proposal, which describes a numbering scheme and various related procedures. Oracle database tables and a web interface for developers to request that a new package version be added to the release as well as web access to nightly build logs are part of the plan. So far only one small modification to the proposal has been made: that the serious attempt at a releasable build be Thursday (morning?) rather than Friday morning. There also was some question whether we should have a fixed weekly cycle altogether.
Calibration: There has been some progress since the last report. Certain crucial class, for example the Xml conversion service, have been written. See the updated web page, particularly the Players and To-do sections. There are two significant pieces of code left (converter for a specific TCDS class, in progress, and a suitable main), and several little odd bits, like entering items in the MySQL database, before the whole thing can be tested.
Very new user: Round about the end of April Heather will have yet another, potentially difficult, user to deal with, similar to this one. [Psst... Maybe we can chip in and get her one of these.]
